Clay Paints

Particles of household paints are the largest source of microplastics in our oceans.  1.9 million tonnes of paint end up in the oceans and waterways every year, which represents 58% of all the microplastics in the water, and outweighs other sources of microplastics, including textile fibers and tire dust.  This study by the Swiss-based Environmental Action (EA) claims that far more paint is leaking into the oceans than previously thought.

A healthier alternative is Clay Paint.

Clay Paint is an eco-friendly finish that is zero VOC. It is smooth to the touch with a marble-like effect, similar to Venetian plasters, but easy for the self-builder to apply.  The health and environmental benefits are unbeatable, too.

In addition to being VOC free, it is free of other harmful emissions, odor free, petroleum free and highly breathable.  Breathability means that the clay will absorb excess moisture from the air, releasing it back as the air dries.  This process, known as moisture buffering, will keep indoor air humidity between 40-60%, an ideal range for keeping viruses, bacteria, and dust mites at bay.

Clay paint have measurably less carbon footprint.  Concerns regarding the safety of household acrylic or oil paints still persist, due to remaining harmful chemical compounds in the paints. Acrylic paints are made of polymers and vinyls, which are petrochemicals.  That essentially means it is derived from fossil fuels, which contribute greatly to the climate crisis.

These compounds are released into the air as the paint dries and negatively affects the indoor environment. These pollutants can cause health issues ranging from eye irritation, breathing difficulties, headaches, nausea, kidney damage, nervous system damage or cancer. VOCs can also contaminate groundwater and drinking water supply wells, creating additional risks.

There are many zero-VOC paints available these days, however, traditional paints still dominate the market.

We can help you navigate and help you make informed decisions for the best paint for you ahead of your next painting job to help minimize the health risks in your project.
